need help with color (solid) to transparent gradients for lower thirds...
on Sep 17, 2009 at 6:14:15 am

I don't know why I'm stuck on this, my brain isn't working.

I am trying to create a cool looking lower third.

I have a texture layer (tinted to black and white) and my rectangle shape layer (for lower third) underneath it set to luma matte so it applies the texture to the shape, but the shape becomes semi transparent, so I duplicated the solid above it, put the ramp colors I like on it (black on top to red on the bottom) and set it to add so the texture shows through, BUT now I'm stuck on how to make the top of the Lower third transparent, but the bottom remain solid so it has a nice fade from a solid look to transparent so it isn't so harsh. I put a mask in, but I know there's gotta be a better, less messy way.

I probably went about all this the wrong way, so can someone tell me what the right way would be? Thanks all

My favorite "fade to transparent" method is the good ol' linear wipe.

There is also a free plug-in somewhere called Alpha Ramp, that pretty much does the same thing.

You could also do track mattes, but you said you didn't want it messy..

I guess what I'm trying to say, wasn't there a way of duplicating the shape, creating a black to white gradient and using that to create transparency from opaque to transparent with a blending mode...

Or how would you accomplish this?

I guess I'd need to see what you are working on to help you better..

If I wanted part of an object to fade to transparent, I would use a linear wipe transition.

Here I have a picture on top of a blue solid.. I used linear wipe to make the bottom right corner fade to transparent. Is this kinda what you are looking for?
