FCP to AE problem
on Aug 26, 2009 at 6:46:51 pm

Hello all. First time in this forum, though I've been using AE for over 8 years now.
What is new is that I've started using FCP in the last year. This is the first time I've used it t send media to AE, and something's not right. After much experimenting and flailing, I've come to the oracle...

The issue is simple. An exported QT movie from FCP shows up as all black in AE. It sees the length and size, but they ain't no picture. AE is installed on a different Mac. I can play it in QT Player on the FCP machine, but on the AE machine it shows up as black. Do I need some codec that's not native to AE?

FCP project settings:
XDCAM EX codec
1280x720
30 fps

Installed on:
Mac Pro 2x2.66GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon
Tiger 10.4.11
4 GB RAM

AE Settings:
Custom preset
1280x720
30 fps

Installed on:
Mac Mini 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Leopard 10.5.7
2 GB RAM

Yes, FCP re-wraps the native XDCAM file to a Quicktime file with a proprietary version of the XDCAM codec (MPEG-2), which is installed by Final Cut Studio. If you don't have FCS installed in the other machine, it won't work. Some people report copying the codecs from one machine to the other, but I don't think that's allowed by the FCS license agreement.

In any case, using MPEG-2 compression to produce interchange files between applications may not be the best idea. You could use Quicktime PNG or Animation files exported from FCP and they will work well and are completely lossless.

Adolfo,

Thanks for the insight. So image sequences are the way to go?

I meant a Quicktime file with PNG encoding, not a numbered PNG still sequence.
Quicktime PNG is a very efficient form of lossless encoding.
