I would take actual footage of a mushroom cloud explosion, and use a mixture of emitters and overlay them to simulate it best. You almost should roto the look as well. Not aware of a mushroom cloud plug in...

I never heard of blender but will find time to check it out. Looks like it might do the job
Managed to fudge something in the end using multiple renders from particle illusion and comping them together in AE. I also used a rather primative mushroom cloud for the matte from PI emitters june(july?) 2004. I didnt have another source of mushroom cloud .. any ideas ?
Have probably got away with it after its graded etc ... lucky i can get away with it being a bit simple....
