AE won't actually use that much RAM until they release a native 64 bit version. This is something they are looking to do with the next major release I think.

Go here: http://www.adobe.com/products/aftereffects/faq/

And twirl open the Support for 64 bit operating systems section.

[Matthew Mullen] "AE won't actually use that much RAM until they release a native 64 bit version."

Incorrect. AE can use more RAM if it runs on a 64-bit operating system. That's the key. And on such a system, it can access up to 4GB per core.

hmm...thanks for that correction, I suppose the question then would be how much RAM do you have installed and how many cores is your machine?

... and if the OS is 64 bit or not, and if they're the proper types of processors, and how much RAM the machine will actually accept.

Not all Macs are created equal.

Dave,

Just curious, do you have a source for the 4 GB per core info?

We don't have enough information about your system. What version of OSX are you running? What kind of Mac do you actually have? How many processors? How many cores per processor? What version of AE do you have?
