Extracting a Video Clip from a DVD for AE
on Sep 28, 2005 at 10:46:56 pm

I have to put together some video clips in AE6.5.

The videos are vob files on a DVD. Is there a way to extract the video off the DVD to either Quicktime or WMV OR do I have to play the DVD and capture through a DV device (like my camcorder?) These aren't copyprotected commercial DVDs, they are homemade from different companies.

Thanks for info!!

On PC, VirtualDub is a free utility that works well.

On Mac, DVDxDV is a cheap and great utility.

I downloaded the VirtualDub software but it won't open the vob files in the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. It says 'no frames' or something like that.

any free or shareware software that will extract the video from a DVD and make a QT or WMV?

Heres a trick I learned along time ago..
Drag your vob file on to your HD...
then take your .VOB file and change the suffix to .mpg
Yeah I know weird.. but do it. accept any changes it warns you about, your icon will also change. Now drag the "new" mpg file into AE.. it should work as regular video

Can you tell me what system your on and what version of AE you are using to do this?

I tried changing the extension on the PC to mpg. I was able to import it into AE but get no picture or sound. Blank.

When I tried it on the Mac, the icon changed to QT, but when Importing into AE I got the error stating "cannot play this movie because it has no duration". But I am able to double click the file on the hard drive and it will open and play in QT window.

Have you tried downloading "MPEG Streamclip"? Works for me.

I feel your DVD pain, by the way.

Check out the tools section of this site.

I had the same problem. When I renamed the .VOB to .MPG they would import into AE but not play properly. I converted them using DG_Index I think it was called.
