Smoke Bending (Gun Barrel)

Hello, I've been all over the internet and I was hoping someone here could help.

I have an effects scene. Close up toward gun, 5 to 10 degrees to right side so you can see a bit down the barrel followed by a rack focus to shooter as they drop the gun. Shallow field of view.

I'm good with making a mask around the gun so I can put the smoke element on "top" of the gun and then apply the layer so it looks like the smoke is coming out of the barrel. I can tinker with the size of the smoke etc.

For the life of me I can't figure out how to get the smoke to "BEND" the necessary 45 degrees once it come out of the barrel. As well as motion tracking as the gun is dropped.

Can anyone help? thanks so much.

JR

I don't understand the question. Why would smoke be turning? Do you mean the way smoke just kind of curls around due to vorticity? Some images demonstrating your issue would be helpful.
Most smoke assets (like those from Action VFX) curl already.

this is a relative angle of the gun. it has an angle where you can see down the barrel. If the gun is smoking, wouldn't the smoke be traveling to the end of the barrel and then upon leaving start going upwards?

You can create pretty realistic smoke using a particle system like Particular and have much more control over it than using a stock smoke clip.

oh yes. I thank you for pointing that out and I apologize for not being clearer earlier. I won't be using any stock smoke effects. The issue i'm having is how close we are to the gun. You can see down the barrel a bit. I feel like if it was a mid shot or more angled, that putting the starting point at the muzzle tip would suffice. However I feel like one would be able to see the smoke coming UP out of the barrel.

I can't figure out how to modify the Particular effect to come up out of the cylinder and then curl upwards at the muzzle tip.

Does that make any sense?
