I've been attempting to do a light painting effect on some footage of a baton twirler. Unlike a point emitter and doing a streaklet effect with Particular, I want to mimic the effect you see in Pixelstick ads ( http://www.thepixelstick.com/img/slider/abstract4.jpg ) In this case, the entire shaft of the baton acting as an emitter.
I thought this would be pretty simple using a layer emitter or a box emitter in particular but it has proven to be not so straight forward. I tried doing a box emitter and manually transforming with the baton. Created a beam effect that was tracked to the twirling motion and used that as a layer emitter. Neither has yielded good results. I would need to generate an absurd amount of particles. I also have licenses for Mir, Form, and 3D stroke, although I'm largely unfamiliar with them and don't know how to properly tool them for this effect.
You might want to try using Saber from videocopilot.net as the base for your animation. You can apply it to a shape mask or use the default two point vectors and apply a lot of force motion blur. Its free and a super helpful tool
Using a combination of the Echo effect and the Saber, plugin, it's looking MUCH better. One thing I can't get quite right is the solid line at the point of origin. I want the entirety of the echo to remain on screen but I don't want that bar. So maybe I can keyframe the decay? Not sure.
