How to digital degrade text / fade into 8bit?

How can I achieve the digital degradation effect used in Pentagrams Artifact project? For the images it looks like it gets dithered to 8-bit ASCII and I'm not sure about the text. More examples on their site: https://www.pentagram.com/work/artifact

Thanks!

To create a dithering pattern like you see in those examples, you would want to control the sequence in which grayscale image levels get turned into such a pattern.

You want to create a grid with gray level squares that go from 0 to 100 in a specific order like shown in that example, so that the first dot would be 1/16 of full black, the second one 2/16 etc. Then you can use a combination of mosaic effect on the original footage/image, this grayscale pattern in matching size to the mosaic and blending modes to determine whether a given dot should be black or white.
