Normalize the speed of a panning shot with Timewarp
on Apr 11, 2019 at 4:33:09 pm

Hi,
I tried to normalize the speed of a panning shot with Timewarp.
First I track a static object in my panning shoot with a null#1.
Then, I animate (in linear) a null#2 to record the speed I want in my pan.

So two methods :
With source frame remapping :
My video start at frame 0
The script will look the nearest distance between the null#1 and null#2 (in x, y or both) and return the timeline value of the null#2 to match the source frame.

In speed value:
Compare the speed of the two nulls to adjust time speed remapping.
This option looks very complicated.

I saw many years ago, a guy normalizing the speed of a for-wheel drive, going down a montain in a static shoot with time remapping... It was very amazing..

Any help will be very very appreciated...
Thanx a lot..

I know I'm not answering your exact question, but timewarping the footage sounds like a very cumbersome method for stabilizing a pan. I stabilize pans by stabilizing the shot with tracking (with multiple parented nulls if it goes for more than one screen) and then adding the smooth camera pan manually back in (with manually placed keyframes) to the stabilized shot.

Hi Kalleheikki,

Thank you for your answer.
I know very well this method... Tracking / Projecting the tracked camera on a 3d backplate and stabilizing and normalizing the speed with an other 3d camera.
It's a bit tricky with after affect and more easier with Nuke..

But the timewarping method could also linearize a moving object on a static shot..
And it will help me lot in many cases.

My skill with after effect script is basic and I hope that someone could help me.

Thank you Kalleheikki...
