Line is being shaky after placing "stroke" outside the group
on Jun 26, 2018 at 10:11:12 am

Hi all.
I have a following problem....
I have an animation where a few squares are scaling up and changing their position slightly at the same time. While they are scaling the size of the line is changing also. To avoid the line size changes I placed "stroke" outside the group for each shape. But after that all the shapes look very shaky while scaling........
What could be the problem?
I would be happy to get any idea on how to fix that.
Thanks.

So no suggestions at all.....
Maybe someone can tell me how to redo it in the way that I don‘t have this problem again?
That‘s what I‘m trying to do:
- import AI file to AE (ai file is a grid of 8 squares to 8 squares)
- convert it into shape layer
- scale up the squares
- reduce the distance between the squares proportionally while scaling them up
- put the stroke outside of each shape group to avoid changing its width

You've got no suggestions because we have absolutely no idea what exactly is going on. Maybe post some video of the problem? A file?

How shake is it? is it a bug? is it judder because of frame rate/scale?

I hope this short video will make it clearer.

I'm guessing that's normal behaviour from getting bigger and smaller at the same time, at one frame the pixels occupy a right columm and on the next the rounding takes them somehow to the left.

I can think of some things you could try to easy that shaky feeling:

1- Make it all happen slower or faster.
2- Give it some influence so its not all that linear.
3- Blur a little and sharpen later
4- animate the stroke down as you make it bigger, so you can adjust it all better while mantaining the "not changing" look (while actually changing a bit)
5- easy up that contrast. Is that your final art look? you could work with some ilumination and textures, it may smooth things around.

Thanks a lot for your help!

I actually decided to redo it in a different way using repeater. It looks better now, but still not perfect. So, I'm going to try the options that you suggested. It's not the final work, but it's supposed to look simple at the end anyway.
Thanks once more!
