I am trying to figure out how to create custom particles in After Effects. I have an Ai File I'd like to use as a particle.

The tutorials I have found online are just for older versions of After Effects. I'm totally lost.

Little more about the project, I am trying to fill a map of DC with the word "Power." I have already figured out how to Track matte particles so they fill a custom shape.

I don't have/can't buy Trapcode.

If you're using CC Particle World (included with Ae), then set its Particle > Particle Type to "Textured QuadPolgyon." Then, in Particle > Texture, set the Texture Layer to refer to your custom particle layer.
