Is this just drawn on frame by frame? I'm more curious about how they have got the text and images to burst apart. Have they used Turbulent Displace?

Yup, that looks like good ol', painstaking, frame-by-frame, cel-type animation. Fortunately, the artist didn't have to be very precise.

-- anyone know of a good tutorial please for how to do frame by frame anim on AE so that you can see before and after frames ( if it can be done )

-- there was a great ' buy and sell' function on Flint that made this very easy but not yet worked this out in AE

------------ any ideas please ?

you can do this by combining photoshop and after effects together.

1. import the video to photoshop (there are several ways to do this)
2. open the timeline and create a frame animation (yes...in Photoshop)
3. paint frame by frame and examine your video as you go through
4. export back to Ae the elements on alpha and make you finishing touches.

some of the aspects of this technique is explained in this tutorial

Hi Roei

Many thanks for this info and link which is VERY interesting --- shall continue researching into this a bit more.

Have to say though that the method as shown in the clip is very very clunky compared to what I have used before however theres some interesting things in there which maybe I can build upon.

In the meantime if any one has any other ideas on this would be very grateful - the clean bg plate and eraser brush technique is great for fx work.

thank you Chris.
about rotoscoping - you really just need to trace a video frame by frame and by combining frame by frame scroll and layers panel with all the brushes - you really can do anything. from what I know - this is usually how it's done. take a look here:
http://carliihde.deviantart.com/art/Animated-Rotoscope-Reaction-What-352889...
http://carliihde.deviantart.com/art/Joseph-Gordon-Levitt-Rotoscope-Animatio...

these were all done in photoshop and I believe that's the same technique.

maybe this will be useful for you too:

what have you used before?

There are some tools on aescripts.com that might help you out. I've never done this before but I think there are some things in there that could be helpful.

The Paint and Stick plugin has a free public beta for a powerful painting engine right inside AE. You could give that a go. :)

Wow. That plugin is unreal. Didn't know that was possible. Mind Blown.

there is also "Video Timeline" in photoshop which is a different approach on animation in photoshop and different from "Frame Animation Timeline" which has more tools for making rotoscoping on video/cell animation easier like onion skin:

I meant that "Video Timeline" has much more control for the type of animation you are looking for - like "Onion Skin".
