Pre Warp Stabiliser Method of camera motion smoothing that gives you the most control?
on Aug 27, 2015 at 7:20:33 am

Hi,

I have a shot I wish to smooth and am not happy with the results of the warp stabiliser, even after adjusting all the parameters. How did AE artists smooth camera movement in the days before warp stabiliser? What method gives you the absolute most control? Is there any way to use Mocha or some other tool to smooth (not eliminate) camera motion? I'm more concerned with shot quality than ease of use.

Mocha, yes:

Or the original AE single tracking point method. You could stabilize it first, then use the tracking data with the smooth expression to add back some of the original motion, as in:

Other option I haven't tried but which looks promising, although it probably overkills to total smoothness:

But you could combine that with using the other tracking data (reversed and smoothed) to add the camera motion back in.

You can track a shot in mocha and apply the track data to itself and use the "smoother" in AE to remove the high frequency jitters, but retain the general camera motion.

There is also a Stabilize Module in mocha Pro that allows you to do the camera smoothing in a simple pass.

This is a tutorial that I did a long time ago (2009!) but the general workflow is still valid.

Track in mocha.
Export your X/Y keyframes to AE.
Copy them to the Anchor Point.
Use Smoother.

Here is another tutorial that shows similar technique with added expressions.
