Animate shapes from illustrator and variable stroke

I need to animate a character in after effects. The problem is that the character has a variable width line. I import the file in to AE and I change the shape adding keyframes to animate the character. But I can't find a way to add the variable stroke. I don't want to animate the stroke itself, just the charcarters shapes and keep the nice variable stroke.

Thanks!

You could try the puppet pin tool. Click on or scroll down to "How the Puppet effect creates outlines." You could try to apply paint strokes using the brush tool.

The stroke of a shape is not used in the determination of outlines; only the path is used.
