Should a shot that both zooms *and dollys out confuse camera tracker?

Hey there,

I have a project that I'm having trouble getting a decent track with. The shot involves a simultaneous zoom out and track back from the corner of a bain marie in a fish shop. Eventually the idea is to put the bain marie on the bottom of the ocean using a number of 2D plates strategically placed throughout the scene and appropriately masked.

Seems to me that if the inbuilt AE tracker doesnt work, theres not much you can do in terms of guiding it to a better solution. Mocha seems to have the same problem. Anyway, the solution I'm looking for isnt for just one plane, but multiple planes at different distances from camera.I guess I could try for an individual solution for each plane, but I worry that multiple solutions wont play nice together.

Many Thanks

Markus

Without seeing the clip it is difficult to help. Keep in mind that in mocha depending on the camera movement... that every "plane" that you want to track has to be tracked in it's own layer.

If you are drawing a large shape around areas that are not moving on the same plane, mocha will surely fail.

Mocha can easily handle multiple layer tracks at once. One tip is to have the layers placed in correct order: things furthest from the camera should be lowest in the layer list. Things closer at the top.

hope this basic tips help. You can also contact mocha support: http://www.imagineersystems.com/support/contact-support/

Thanks Ross, I appreciate the advice. I'll keep that in mind for future projects.

I may end up replacing the ground plane in Mocha and tracking the rest in foundry's camera tracker plug, which seems to be giving me more reliable results than the AE camera tracking plugin. If you're still interested, a low-res preview of the shot is here http://www.markusstone.com/hosted_files/BG_Plate.mov

The sign will be replaced, CG elements added to the bain marie and set extension outside with some CG fish and sharks.

Cheers

Markus
