I would use Particle Flow in 3DS Max. You can create 3 or 4 particles, assign them to Particle Flow, then animate the texture maps so that they are changing over time (from wireframe to solid grey). Done. I'll bet you could achieve it in the CC version of After Effects with a C4D particle system, but I'm still on CS6.

Ok thank you, I'll look into it. I have no experience with 3ds Max but I am up for the challenge. If I watch some tutorials do you think this is something a dedicated beginner can achieve?

Hi Jordan -

Got your post through my website, and thought I'd answer here, so others can see this. It would take too long to walk you through this, since Particle Flow is not something you just jump into and play around with, but you can learn it:

There's also the possibility that you could use one of the other particle systems in Max, and use multiple instances of it to create the varying particle shapes. In essence, what you do, is create the individual shapes you want to appear in the "stream" of particles, and then assign them to the particle system. The SuperSpray particle system will be able to let assign your objects as particles.
