Hey CC Fellows,

Looking for some guidance/advice on a music video workflow and techniques.

I am doing a music video for a rapper in NYC and want to animate his verses as text in After Effects while he walks around the city.

The assembly edit is done in FCP7 and ready for post. Here is what I'm thinking to do.

1. Export an XML of my FCP Edit into After Effects.
2. Color Correct each clip.
3. Rotoscope each clip.
4. Investigate the best way to animate stylized text btw the rotoscoped musician and the original background.
5. Investigate the best way to sync his lyrics to the animated words.
6. Export the video and hopefully get much more work as an editor. :]

Thoughts? Answers, links and tutorials greatly appreciated to any of the corresponding steps I've mentioned. Especially the 4 +5.

Thanks CC members, truly a fantastic website and community, I have been using it for as long I can remember.

The most time consuming part, depending on the number and length of your shots, will be the roto. You definitely want to use the Roto Brush for this - it will save you huge amounts of time getting the text behind the talent. That said, don't just jump in and start monkeying with the tool - it will drive you nuts! Go over the Adobe help file for the Roto Brush, then watch this:

As far as animated stylized text, there are too many possibilities to address here - take a look in Adobe Bridge at some of the Text Animation Presets - that will get you thinking. It mostly depends on the style of the video - jumpy and grungy? Slick and stylish? You're the artist on this...
