Using After Effects as my compositing package of choice for a VFX short and running into a wall. I want to create a wispy smoke effect (something I can do easily in Particular) but then have a luminance channel on a layer be the emitter.

I know I can have Particular use a layer as an emitter, but it's not really using the lum as the emitter per se, just as a way to control color or size of particles.

Not adverse to using another piece of software or plugin – any suggestions?
