I have some regular 24 fps HD footage. I'd like to simulate 60fps footage, converting it so it will appear in slow motion. This means intelligently interpolating frames. Is this possible in AE and if so, how?

I believe that the only way you can do this - since of course you can't add frames in the true sense, is to use interframe blending, and hope that it works. There are a couple of plugins which do this quite well, one is Twixtor, and it works via "motion estimating":

The other one is The Foundry's Kronos:

I know that you can do this in AE, and you may want to start there and see what results you can get, but the two above are known for their stellar results.

Here's some interesting discussion, as well as video samples of slomo from 24fps vs slomo from 30 or 60fps:

Note that the Pixel Motion frame blending and the Timewarp effect in After Effects are based on Kronos, which we licensed from The Foundry. So, you already have that built in.

Thanks Todd -

I had no idea that Timewarp and Pixel Motion were based on Kronos - thanks!

Thanks. A quick test shows that a setting of speed =50 with timewarp using pixelmotion and frame blending turned on gives pretty great results.

Anything 'slower' starts showing intraframe distortion but guessing a LOT depends on content.

can you try slowing 50% then taking that render and ingesting again for more slowdown. Sometimes it creates nicer results than trying to warp all at once.
