I am an After Effects newbie and was wondering whether anyone would be able to give some advice on the best way to replicate the effect seen in the video ( - 6 seconds to 8 seconds (just the animating in bit, I should be able to manage the sliding layers). I do apologise for the less that accurate title, but I really can't think of the best way to put it!

Short of manually key-framing the images' (position, scale etc.), is there an quicker way? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

You would definitely get a boost from using Red Giant Planespace - it allows you to create all sorts of groupings of layers, from matrixes to spheres and cylinders - you'd just be using the matrix and grid capabilites. You can create a layout, then a second one, and animate between them. It takes a bit of work to do this manually, but you could also achieve it that way as well.
