Keying when the subject and background are similar colors
on Mar 12, 2013 at 9:56:15 pm

Hi! I am learning AE and got hold of some footage to work with. An African American gentleman on a whitish background. He is wearing a suit and tie. When I go to key the background, I am having problems because his white shirt keys too. How can I separate this shirt from the background?

Thanks!

You're going to have a MUCH easier time if you shoot against a chroma key background and not white.

Now, if you have no other choice but to use what you shot, you can duplicate the layer and animate a mask around the white shirt. If there's a spot where the shirt borders the background, you'll have to be very, VERY careful and painstaking.

The process is known as rotoscoping, and it's no fun. But you'll have garnered an appreciation of the virtues of chroma keying.

No choice on this one, unfortunately. A bunch of video shot at multiple locations. All they had was a sheet they threw up and lit (not too well either). I have what I have and have to figure it out.

Know of any good tutorials?

Here's a good place to start for rotoscoping:

You may want to look into Primatte Keyer's Hybrid Matte tools.
