Beam effect, motion tracking and shape fill
on Oct 22, 2011 at 12:16:50 pm

Hi there,
I'm at a lose on how to do something that seems so simple, im sure this question has been answered before but I simply cant find an answer to solve my issue.

With motion tracking & the beam effect I have created a pseudo 3d triangle (4 points with 6 lines/beams)
I want to fill the triangles created with a colour(using a mask and a solid layer?), like this > (03:01)

This effect is used all over the place so I'm guessing there is a simple enough way of achieving it within After Effects.

Any help to point me in the right direction would be very well received.

< at 03:01 beam used to create triangular shapes that are filled with colours. How do you fill the shapes with colour?!

Cool video - is this video the project that you're working on that you need the mask/solid help with?

If you can be more specific, I might be able to offer some suggestions. I assume that you've created the desired solid (CTRL+Y) and that you've selected the pen tool from the tool menu (shortcut: "G") and simply marked out the mask path that way? ...or are you talking about something more complicated involving particles or an effect like Trapcode Shine (http://www.redgiantsoftware.com/products/all/trapcode-shine/)?

Nice titles right!? To be clear, I did not create this video, that was http://prologue.com/
I saw this video at the 2009 conference it was made for, http://www.offf.ws

I am interested in the technique where triangles have been created over a video, the points of the triangle appear to be pinned/follow motion tracking points from the video.

My approach was to use the Beam effect in after effects to draw lines between several points, making triangles (this way i have full control over the movements of the points) My issue it that I want to fill the internal areas created by the beams with different colours, very similar to the OFFF video.

Is that a little more clear?

That makes sense! I've wondered about that effect for a while but never had a reason to implement it. I'll give it a shot and upload my results in a day or two (are you on a major time crunch?)

It should all be so easy right!?
Its for a showreel for a new portfolio, I'm still working on the site itself, so not a huge rush right now, I've tried so many different things and nothing is working so it would be nice to get this last bit done.

Good luck with experimenting

Did you get anywhere with it?
I still cant figure it out. contemplating the horror of doing it by hand :-(

I didn't, sorry. I've had to work a few late nights so I haven't even set up the comp yet (what a loser I am, I should quite my job and be a CreativeCow forum groupie - I'd be happier for sure).

where I'm at with solving this
Here's what I was thinking (I think you were already thinking similar as well)... a script that manages line angle so that it always points to a target object (could be a NULL) - however, that doesn't solve the line-length issue... (was planning on checking Henry's post here (among others): http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/959171 or this post about eyes that follow: http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/227/7436)

I haven't started thinking about how to fill them in yet... Should have a few minutes to play with this script around 5-6 PST today - let me know if you have any luck!

Which answer is confusing? The one on Mocha or the one on Autotrace?

The other post i linked to seemed ask and answer the same question as i have here, but it appears to do something entirely different.

I have also found this script witch seems to be another way to achieve what i'm after (by controlling individual points of a mask rather than using beams) but again, its not doing anything. I feeling pretty confused and stupid now. Is it really this hard?
