Using 3d Stroke on keyed footage
on Jun 6, 2014 at 4:10:12 pm

Hi, I'm still new to Trapcode's 3D stroke and I'm trying to use it on keyed footage such as the screen capture below. How can I make 3D stroke path along the orange?

What are you trying to accomplish? Do you want the 3d Stroke lines to follow the orange exactly or are you wanting it to twirl around it?

I'd like it to follow the orange lines exactly. Really I'd like every bit of orange to be replaced by the stroke.

Draw four different masks of straight lines with the mask tool on top of the orange lines.
Apply 3d Stroke.
Done.

Alternatively, draw one straight line with the mask tool.
Apply 3d Stroke.
Enable the repeater.
Turn off the Symmetric Doubler option
Change the Z offset to 0 and the Y offset to whatever amount you need for them to line up
Change the number of instances to 4.

Thanks but that's what I'm trying to avoid. This is a 4 minute sequences with many shots and lots of movement.

I'm confused. Are you hoping that 3d Stroke will be able to detect the alpha of a layer and add itself to the middle of it somehow (and at the right width? So, are you basically wanting 3d Stroke to add depth to a graphical element?

If not, I've no idea what you are asking for.

That would be nice. Really I'm looking for a way to create mask paths based on alpha (or hue, or whatever) that I can then apply 3D stroke to.

Auto Trace [link] is the only built-in thing I know of.
