I am currently working for a company trying to develop a heavy-hitting motion graphics team, and am one of the motion artists that is going to be working on the projects...

..what is the best rig for a machine doing a lot of design in illustrator, photoshop, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, and Cinema 4D? Mac Pro preferable, as I hate windows machines.

I've currently got an earlier model Mac Pro:

2 quad-core (8 core total) 3.0 ghz Xeon
12 gb 66 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
ATY,RadeonX1900 512 mb
3 HDD, 700GB each (NOT on RAID)

I keep hitting render crashes, lags, delays, etc. I'd like to build a machine that is tailored specifically to motion graphics and animation.

Any recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks.

You might want to ask this question on the Apple Motion forum:

one thing I've noticed with Motion is that it hates dual monitor setups. It uses the video card so extensively that a dual monitor setup dramatically drops it's performance.

I should probably add this: if you anticipate doing any work in After Effects -- and why wouldn't you -- think about tricking your new box out with RAM. In it's multiprocessing mode, AE can't really use RAM effectively until it can access at LEAST 3GB per core.

You say you'd like to have an operating system, too? More RAM!

For Motion make sure you don't get the stock graphics card - right now the best card is the ATI Radeon 4870, although 5870 is supposed to be available soon if it isn't already...and lots of RAM is always a good thing.
