My problem seems basic enough but after googling all day and not finding the answer I was hoping to get help here.

I'm new, like 1 day new, to AE. I'm using AE-cs6.

My questions is about the Presets that come with AE.

I import my movie. When I add a preset, it adds it to the entire movie. I want to add the preset only to part of the movie, not the whole movie, but I can't figure out how.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just split the movie part using Ctrl+Shift+D & then apply the preset to your desired split.

If you split the layer as suggested, the effect will go away abruptly, like a cut. If that works for you, great.

If you want something more gradual, you have a couple of options. You can reduce the effect to nothing by animating it with keyframes. Or you can duplicate the layer, remove the effect from the top layer, then animate its opacity from 0 to 100. It'll like the effect dissolved out.
