So when I create masks from text in AE I get the holes left over like in an R or a B or O. Is there a way to get a compound-path like mask in AE, or another technique to use to knock out the leftover holes besides using a separate layer track matte?

Set the hole masks to Subtract. May have to ensure they are after the Add masks in the stack. I'm surprised that doesn't happen automatically when you convert the text.

For whatever reason that doesn't seem to be working! It sets the masks to difference by default, but whether their set to add or difference, or whether I move the hole layer up or down in the stack, it doesn't want to knock it out.

I figured the same thing.

Crap, nevermind, it does work.

I am using this in the context of generating a scribble style with the generate>scribble FX, and it seems scribble doesn't respect the mask settings.

Aaaaand again, I found it!

Theres a setting for "all masks using modes".

Thanks for helping me to figure it out! :)
