1) Create a simple precomp. Just a solid.

2) In the main comp, put a rectangle mask on your precomp layer.

You will see one pixel worth of transition.

3) In the main comp, put a rounded mask on your precomp layer.

You will see two or more pixels worth of transition.

4) Scale it. You will see AE use even more pixels for transitions.

N.B., this does not happen if you put a mask on a solid in your main comp.

Why does AE treat masks on precomps differently?

Well, there IS a difference between a rectangular mask and a rectangular mass with rounded corners, y'know.....

.....and why are you scaling things up when you don't have to?

Thank you Dave for checking in on me. They have moved me out of AE instensive care and the doctor says I should be up and about in four weeks or so.

As for the rounded corners, I still think it is a bug. I don't see any reason a precomp should be treated differently from a solid when the precomp is just a solid.

As for scaling, it was almost unavoidable. The alternatives would have been more time consuming. There are about 500 diffent masks that all have the same shape. I never imagined that scaling one would be too much for Adobe to handle consistently. (n.b., Nobody took up my questions about this being the vector age in the other thread.)

Anyway, thanks again. I've come to terms with AE. I have a half dozen or so workarounds that should get me through.

Render order is everything.

When you precomp, in effect that makes that Precomp a source. That's a feature not a bug. The thing you're looking at that's driving you mad is the antialiasing. There's a switch for that. Deselect it and see if that helps.
