Hello,

For outputting alpha graphics, what codec is the best option? Animation or Apple ProRes 4444?

Thank you.

It all depends on where it's going NEXT. If the next application can't read Prores 4444, it won't be very useful.

...but since we don't know where it's going next, we can't give you a straight answer.

For me ProRes 4444 is less clunky then the Animation codec and I stopped using the Animation codec years ago.

There are actual differences between graphics and video. Graphics are best in the animation codec, but video is best in APR codec (or some other video codec). In any case, the differences will be very small. It used to matter back when computers had to count not only fields but also interweave. And it matters even less now with Dynamic Link between Premiere and AE. Your final output is your final output.

In a quick nut shell: for green screen use APR4444, but for floating pictures, text use Animation.

But really Dynamic Link is awesome!

Thank you all for the help guys.

I use AE then place lower thirds graphics with text into Adobe Premiere Pro for final delivery into encore DVD, PAL.

If that actually means, "I use AE to make animated lower-third backgrounds", sure, why not use ProRes 4444? It ought to work just fine. Knock yourself out.

If you're actually adding the text in AE as well, I'd consider using Premiere Pro for the text. That way, you render an animated background once, and put any kind of text you want on it over and over again.
