Where do Adjustment Layers fit into the order of internal processing in AE?

And what about stacking Adjustment Layers? How are those processed? I have about 40 4K Adjustment Layers stacked into a comp and it's absolutely brought AE to its knees.

I bet you don't need so many adjustment layers. I bet you can apply a lot of the effects to the footage layers themselves.

When you consider that an adjustment layer affects EVERY layer below it in the timeline, you're probably forcing AE to do a lot of needless calculating.

Eliminate or at lease minimize the use of adjustment layers... life gets better.

That is correct. Adjustment Layers create a duplicate of the layers below them.
