Basically, I'm doing a frame-by-frame revealing of text. I want the text to start out completely hidden and then slowly reveal itself. The only way I've currently thought of doing it is with black squares moving further away from the text, but I can't seem to get the black square to 100% match the black color used in the background, so I'm wondering if there is any alternatives to doing this.

Place a mask around the text layer, keyframe the mask. Or just use the black solid above the text layer you already created as a track matte. Select the text layer, press f4 to reveal track mattes, place the text directly below the black layer in the layer stack and change the track matte to "alpha matte".
