 | creating layers from groups - is it possible?

Hi
I have an illustrator file that is in AE and I've created shapes from vector file which has given me several hundred 'groups' within 'contents'. As I want to add expressions to the groups and manipulate them in the z axis, is this only possible if the groups become layers (which can be made 3D) or is there a way of making the groups 3D? Why is it never easy?
Any help gratefully received. Cheers
Russ

Is there a reason you converted the Illustrator artwork into shapes? You can use it as is (with all the vector information intact) without converting them.
To answer your question, you'll need things on their own layers in order to animate them separately on Z. It might be easier to separate them into layers in your Illustrator document first before importing.
