I've been looking for this answer for a while, but have hit a dead end.

When I place GLOW on my adjustment layer, it works as expected, but when I place CURVES on the same layer and try to make changes it has no affect.

What's really confusing is that it worked on the video tutorial I was watching...

Thanks in advance for any help.

What version of After Effects? What operating system?

Show screenshots of the Timeline panel and Effect Controls panel with relevant properties exposed.

If possible, upload the project to a file-sharing site and provide the link.

What are you expecting the Curves effect to do to a black and white image?

It's supposed to change the RGB of the white sections when you manipulate their respective graphs. Basically allowing you to tint it to taste.

I did a test on a white rectangle with a RAMP applied to it, and it worked fine. But for some reason it has no affect on the comps in that file.

When you are adjusting the curves, you are adjusting points between(in RGB) 0-255. In your image, everything is either, 0 or 255, there is nothing in-between to adjust. A ramp has a gradient, that has information in the areas of 1 to 254, so they can be affected by the curves affect. In your image, the only one that will have any affect on either the full RGB or one of the channels will be the point in the upper right, cause that's the 255 point, and all the levels are at 255 right now, if you move that one around, you will see a difference in your results.

Ah, okay. Thanks for taking the time to explain it.

So I was able to get it to work, and I'm not sure why it works, but...

Adding a black solid into the spectrum comp and setting that layer to SCREEN causes the colouring effect to work.

I discovered this when I added another layer for an additional effect, but that layer was scaled so it only covered part of the spectrum.

You can see the white section at the top of the spectrum.

Like I said I don't understand this behaviour, but I'm happy to have stumbled upon it, and to share in case someone else can use the info. ^___^

Derek,

Thank you for posting this workaround. I was having the EXACT same issue this morning and this fixed it. Sweetness! You rock!
