Hoping someone can help on this - I want text to move from behind a single vertical white line like it is appearing from behind?

Using a mask with the text and animate it:-)

So how do I stop the mask being connected to the text - can't seem to seperate the two. Sorry for the basic Qs!

If you animate the Mask Path to reveal your text then just animate the Mask path to somewhere where its not going to affect the text afterwards.

Gavin, you might also want to experiment with the linear wipe effect. You can apply that, set where you want the text to appear from by adjusting the transition completion, and then just move the text position properties.

Also, here is a thread with a similar question that tackles the problem, and in there I included a sample project that should help you with the technique.

Thanks so much - got it working on the linear wipe option. I still don't get why the masks I assign to a text layer are tied to the text so I can't move the mask without the text going with it? Why can't the mask stay in one position and the text move from behind it into view? Can I unconnect them in any way?

The text will stay where it is if you animate the Mask Path

And will the text move and the mask stay put if I change the text path?

IF you animate the mask path only, the text will not move, just the mask around it.
