copy path from illustrator into after effects?

I am on Adobe CC.
I am trying to copy a path I made in illustrator into after effects, but it isn't working for me.
I made a path on illustrator, closed it, selected it, managed to paste it within illustrator so it's in the clipboard.
I went into after effects, but 'edit..paste' is greyed out.
Then within illustrator I tried- edit..preferences..file handling and clipboard..
AICB was unticked and "preserve appearance and overprints" was chosein instead of "preserve paths". I ticked AICB and chose "preserve paths" did ok.
Still though, a path I can copy/paste within illustrator, doesn't seem to paste into after effects. The paste option in after effects is greyed out so I can't copy from illustrator and psate to after effects, though i'm able to paste within illustrator, or within after effects.

Create a solid first and paste to that.
