Basically I have lots and lots of image sequences that I want to work with in an animated timeline. 001. 002. 003. 004. 005. Etc.

I want to be able to import them into timeline and work with them independently as "one item" instead of 153. I would like to change their duration as a single function, apply filters and masks as a single render, play with their position (x,y) in the canvas as "one item",

To be able to get into the time line and still edit an image as an individual frame.

Is there a way to work with items in AE in this way?

Nope: you can import an image sequence into AE (don't forget to set the proper frame rate in AE's Interpret Footage settings)....

...or you can import all the individual images.

The solution would be to get all the work on the individual images done properly before you import the image sequence into AE. Then you wouldn't have to ask AE to do something it can't do.
