I'd really like to add a sparkly, particle fly by underneath some text to highlight a word. However, the only way I can find to accomplish this is to purchase Trapcode Particular or something similar.

Does anyone know a way to create something similar? Is there an effect that comes with AE that I could use instead?

Check out this thread where I posted a project on fairy dust: http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/202/895017. Just change the particles to stars and adjust the gravity and you should be pretty close.
