simple 'jitter' effect
on Jun 7, 2013 at 8:24:03 am

I am cutting a drama documentry. A man is interviewed, talking about his terrible expeiences when lost in the snow.
I have cut an actor in walking up a hill. I am now trying to create a 6 frame moment where, as he walks, the image violently jitters, the image is still visibal but momentarily distorted, with maybe a colour trace. I will add a distorted audio hit to go with it.

It is to symbolise his fear etc.

Can anyone suggest a simple - ish way to do this. I am still on the footslopes of AE.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Dan.

Here's my recipe for doing that:

Add CC Motion Tile to your layer and check the Mirror Edges option. Add a shift Channels effect. Now duplicate your layer twice, for a total of 3 layers. You want to make each layer display only one color channel. So for the top layer -> Shift Channels change the "Take Green/Blue" to Full off. Do this for all three layers so you have a Red/Green/Blue layer. Now change all the layers tranfer mode to screen.

Finally just animate the Motion Tile center for each layer very quickly. Add a start keyframe, move 5-6 frames forward and add an end keyframe. Now in the middle add a keyframe that moves the video. Do this for all 3 layers, but don't move them all the exact same.

You might also add some motion blur to taste.
I made a simple example project in case my explanation was unclear: 4050_rgbsplitfolder.zip

Hi Jonny,
Thank you so much for your post. Very clear advise and absolutely the effect I was trying to achieve.
The only thing I did differently was to go - Layer_Blending Mode_Add. To get the layers to be transparent.

I couldn't see the way you suggested and looked around the layer pull down menu.

Thank you very much for this!!!

Cheers,
Dan.

To have access to the blending modes, on the bottom left corner of your timeline there are 3 small icons, selecting the middle one will "expand or collapse the transfer control panel" and reveal the modes pulldown. Or you can right click by "Source Name" and choose "Columns" > "Modes". Finally if you have the modes visible, you can use the shift and plus/minus keys(not the ones on the number keypad) to toggle through all the transfer modes, I find that to be a nice time saver when trying to find just the right look.

Glad I was able to help you out though, Dan, you have a great weekend.
