I am working on a custom transition where moths fly in and land, completely filling the screen.. Is this something I can use particular for?
I have a layer that has the moth with flapping wings.. How can I randomly fly them in and land?

Just my opinion, but I think you would find Trapcode Form an easier way to go about attempting this project. Check out some of the tutorials over at Redgiant, Text to Sand should give you a good starting place, change the particles to custom particles and some manipulation of the layer maps should do the trick.

Matthew

Check this tutorial on using Particular with Particles as Textures/Sprites.

Also as John said, Trapcode Form is is another way to go.

Check this:

Search for "Logo Reveal using Trapcode Form/Particular" and you will get many results which will help.
