Is there any way of positioning characters in a word at different Z posn's (or for that matter x or y). I don't want to animate them but want to see the effect of this when I move the camera. How do I adjust the positions of each letter?

Twirl open the text and you will need to add a text animator and enable individual character 3D. From there you Animate the Z-position and then twirl open the advance Range parameters and enable randomize.

You can use Per-Character 3D option from Animator(small Fly Out under Text). Then add Position Animator and change the z(or x or Y) value. Then add a Wiggly Selector and keep the Wiggle/Second at Zero so that there will be no motion.
