What does the Adjustment Layer **switch** do?

Take note that I put asterisks around the word switch, not talking about Adjustment Layer. So I mean the switch in the Timeline that is represented by circle with half black and half white? When I click on it, my effects are gone from that layer. What does it actually do? Thanks guys!

Sebastian

It will convert the selected layer to Adjustment Layer.

See this:

http://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/creating-layers.html#adjustment_...

For example, make a new Solid , Apply Brightness and Contrast Effect to it and increase the Brightness. The moment you Enable the Adjustment layer Switch, it will behave as an Adjustment Layer and layers below it will get affected.

To add to what Vishesh said, if you disable the Adjustment Layer switch on an adjustment layer you end up with a regular white solid.
