How'd they do that? Animated films...

Hi Creative Cow Friends,

I'm looking for some analysis. I'm interested in making videos like this one:

What software tools would you suggest I use? My analysis says that I'd produce the entire movie in Adobe After Effects, possibly brining in drawings from Adobe Illustrator? But, maybe I would do some stuff in Adobe After Effects and bring the final edit into Adobe Premier? I also own a copy of Final Cut Pro X

Here's another example as well:

Thanks in advance for any analysis you can send my way.

Kevin

You can make these videos in After effects. No 3-rd party plugin is required as the inbuilt effects are enough for this animation.

For Drawings Illustrator is best as it will create vector images.

For final editing you can either PPro or FCP depending on your ease.

If you want to edit in PPro then you will be having an advantage of Dynamic Linking between After effects and PPro.
Here is the link on Dynamic Linking:

Hi Vishesh,

Thanks for the great advice. You mentioned that the final video could be produced in Premiere Pro or in FCPX. Which part of the workflow would require me to hop out to one of these applications. I may have misunderstood your comments but it sounds like the whole video could be produced in Adobe After Effects.

Thanks for the clarification,

Kevin

You can use any software depending on your ease for final composting.

For Ppro there will be the advantage of Dynamic Linking. Check the link on the previous comment.

You could produce the whole video in After Effects, but unless it's really short (like 10 seconds) you'll probably want to separate the project into different shots/scenes, create each one in After Effects (preferably making each one a little over-length to allow for slight timing changes later on), render them as QuickTime movie files, then edit those together in FCP or PPro, where you'd also add sound effects/music/voiceover etc. or maybe tweak the colours a little, or even change the background if you've rendered from After Effects with an alpha channel.

So basically: do your drawing in Illustrator or Photoshop, do your animation in After Effects and edit it all together in FCP or PPro.
