Making Particular 3D

Hi CC,

I know this is a really basic question but how do you make Particular 3D? It has 3D attributes but AE doesn't like me when I try to make it 3D and the rotation shows no depth.

What needs to happen?

Max

What sort of animation you are making? Also what type of emitter you are going to use?

Particular emits particle in 3D space automatically.

Well, what I was working on didn't really pan out so I switched gears.

Overall it's just a directional box stream of particles but when I rotate it it's flat which I thought strange as it's naturally 3D (or 2.5D) the moment it's on the stage.

So do I need to use a light or null as an emitter?

Max

You can use Grid as emitter Type and a Null Attach to it.

Here is a tutorial from Harry Frank which may help you:

Particular projects 3D on it's plane(generally a solid) and for all intensive purposes, it is 3D, but as you found out, you can't move or rotate it's solid or the illusion is destroyed. To keep particular 3d you have to work withing particular's own settings to change location or rotation.

With Particular you either need to adjust the values of your emitter, or twirl open the world transform group and change your position/rotation there.

To restate what John said above: Particular should be applied ONLY to 2D layers in order for the 3D-ness of the effect to work properly.

This may seem counter-intuitive but it's the nature of the beast.

If you want to rotate your particle system you can use the World Transform section to rotate the system independently of the camera.
