You can't use an eraser tool to do this. That's for painting. You can fake it by animating a mask -- or several masks -- on a solid, then using it as a track matte.

It'll be a good fake.

When you say painting, can I some how paint black on the sides of a comp to make it look erased?

You could take a solid and place it over your composition and use the eraser on that. You could even animate the brush stroke. Then you could use that as a track matte for your final video.

I made a quick example: 4606_eraserfolder.zip

If it helps, I created a CS5 version of the effect. There's nothing with these techniques though that couldn't be replicated in any version that has paint/eraser tools in AE. If you have any questions just let me know.

using Paint, make a (pre)Comp that has the erasing effect you want, using black on white or the inverse.

Then, use that comp as a track mask.
