need to remove scar/bald spot on actor...trying to use clone stamp tool
on Aug 21, 2012 at 12:14:40 am

hello.

i'm doing post on a student film where one of the primary actors has a small bald spot due to some scar and he really wants it to go away...i need some help

i'm having some luck using the clone stamp tool in AE 6 but don't fully understand all of the options in the clone tool's dialog boxes, like the spacing % and angle.

its only four or five scenes where the spot is visible but there mostly handheld shots so i can't really see using tracking but i'm open for any options/opinions!

thank you

matthew

Here's a link to the Clone Stamp help

Angle is if you use an elongated/oval brush. Pick one of those brushes an adjust the angle and you will see what I mean.

Spacing = The distance between the brush marks in a stroke, measured as a percentage of the brush diameter. When this option is deselected, the speed at which you drag to create the stroke determines the spacing.

Both angle and spacing are more for painting then cloning.

AE tracks fairly well. I've replaced the logo on a guys shirt on a handheld shot using the tracking tools in AE. Unless you have attempted it and it's just not going to work I wouldn't dimiss that as an option.

thanks for the help, i will give the tracking a try, the one thing i'm not sure about when it comes to using tracking for this application is i'm constantly having to resample the guys hair as the texture and variations change constantly

can you track and still do that? i think of tracking being for when your replacing a set object like a logo...

That won't be easy, I was thinking you would track the scar.

Without seeing the video, my workflow would be to create a clone/fake hair layer that will blend and cover the scar. Track the scar and then hopefully apply the tracking data to the clone/fake hair layer. It might be that you can't get a good track, then you may very well will have to manually do this.

If you have CS6 you might want to give the new 3D camera tracker a shot too.

Good luck with it, going to be tough, I know, I've been there.
