After effects CS6 3D Camera Tracker
on May 8, 2012 at 8:53:41 pm

Each time I try to use this feature After Effects hangs on the 'initializing' phase and never actually applies it. This is strange as well because the exact same thing happens with warp stabilization and I had the same issue which I was unable to resolve in CS5.5.

Warp stabilization works for me in Premiere Pro for some reason so this is not too much of an issue for me.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Any suggestions to solve the problem would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Dan

The effect starts off automatically AFAIK. Can you describe more on this 'initialization stage'? A screen cap perhaps?

Can you provide more information on your clip?

Duration:
File Format/CODEC:
Layer OR Nested Comp:
Resolution:

The file itself is shot at 25fps 1080p with a Canon DSLR so it is a .MOV using the H.264 codec if I'm not mistaken, and the clip itself is only about 3 minutes long. The strange thing is After Effects still runs smoothly, it does not crash. There is the blue banner across the preview that says 'initialising' and under the effects panel next to 'rendering frame x of x' it also is stuck on initialising for about an hour or so before I go ahead and stop it.

Same for me ! never could launch the camera 3D tracker !!
it hangs and the CPU gets overloaded with aefslink that never quits !
working with a 2011 Imac. The same applies with a 2010 imac.

[Daniel Fischer] "The file itself is shot at 25fps 1080p with a Canon DSLR so it is a .MOV using the H.264 codec if I'm not mistaken, and the clip itself is only about 3 minutes long"

3 minutes is a very long time to track anything. Do you really need to track something that long? There are hefty memory requirements for both the Warp Stabilzier and 3D Camera Tracker. Here's a link that spells it out - http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2012/05/memory-and-storage-tips-for-warp...

I suggest that you both look at reducing the duration of your required tracks. If that is somehow not possible then here's a workaround -

1) create a smaller, lower version of your clip - ie if you are starting off with a 1920x1080 clip, then create a smaller version, say 640x360 (ensure that the screen and pixel aspect ratios are identical for both the original and the low res duplicate).

2) import the lower rez movie and apply 3D Camera Tracker to that. Insert all the objects that you want into this scene.

3) When you are done, go to the Project Panel and duplicate this comp. With the duplicate selected in the Project Panel, goto File>Scripts>Scale Composition.jsx.

4) In the dialog box, enter 1920 into the New Width text entry box and hit the Scale button. Very quickly, the comp will be scaled. CLose the dialog panel and open the new comp.

Your objects, Nulls, Text, Solids etc will be in the scene as they were in the lower rez comp. Your camera will have been adjusted to work with the higher rez comp.

Now all you need to do is to drop in the high rez, original footage into this comp and switch off the visibility of the low rez layer.

There are disadvantages to this workaround for object removal and more tricky stuff such as camera projections but as long as your clip isn't very long, which should be the case most of the time, you should be able to enjoy the benefits of the 3D Camera Tracker.

The problem is not the size of the footage. Mine is a test with only 200 frames.
But the analyze cursor stays at zero the whole time. Not starting at all.
I tried with the master suite and the production suite.
I'm only installing AE, premiere, speedgrade and prelude.
Could it be it misses something?

JP, it could be a footage related issue. What file format/CODEC are you working with? Also, try re-rendering the video out to something 'safer' such as QuickTime Animation CODEC and use this for tracking.

It's a 7D dslr mov file.
I'll try another format but I never read that AE could'nt handle DSLR file with the CS6 version?
I also saw some tests using DSLR footage without any problem.
Strange...

It's not a compatibility issue but possibly memory-related as the AVC file requires a fair bit of processing during decoding. How much RAM do you have on your machines.

Please report back on the result after trying with the QT Animation CODEC.

Hi JP, apologies that things haven't worked out with our assistance. With the launch of CS6, it looks like the Adobe forum has a few of their engineers, on-hand, looking for user issues - possibly, such as yours.

Having said that, can you try a clip from the following URL to see what AE CS6's 3D Camera Tracker does for you.

Ah! Sorry I forgot about it - http://worldclips.tv/.

It's just a site where you can get free footage. Let me know if you have issues with them and if you do, let me know which clips you are using so that I can do a test on my end.

Hi Roland,
I tried with the champselyseestraffic.mov and I have the same problems. I reinstalled everything after deinstalling and I'm still stucked at 0%(frame1L of 349)
It never moves... but I have an aeselflink process running all the time(26% cpu) and never quitting !

Hi JP, I saw your post in the Adobe Forum. Mylenium has pointed you to this URL - http://blogs.adobe.com/toddkopriva/2011/02/troubleshooting-quicktime-errors....

There is a link on that page that goes here -> http://forums.adobe.com/message/2808379#2808379.

Essentially, check to see if you have QT or AVI CODEC issues.

Of course check on your firewall (if any) settings as mentioned in the URL mylenium pointed you to.

Also, let me know of your MultiProc settings and if things work better without MP.

I removed all my video (perian, flip4mac) addons.
And still does'nt work. The preferences for multiproc are by defaults. 7GB used for AE, 5 for the rest and no multi.
And i get an "unable to acquire rendered frame message" And still 0%

Try the following -

1) Give 2GB or RAM per AE proc.

Given you have 12GB of RAM, you should set aside 4GB for other apps. You then have 8B left for AE. Therefore, you should set aside 4 procs for AE with each proc using 2GB of RAM.

If i use 2gb I can't get 4 procs running, i have to use 1.5 wich I did.
And now AESelflink processes are 6 running at the same time without any more progress and I can't even kill them if I don't Kill AE first.
Very strange behaviour...
Thanks for trying to resolve my time consuming problem Roland

If MP is off and yet there are multiple instances of AESelflink then perhaps your Prefs File is corrupted.

To delete the Prefs File and force AE to create a new one, press CMND+OPTION+SHIFT when AE is starting up.

Multiple instances appears only when MT is on. Or when I launch Warp and 3D at the same time. and never quitting.
I'm gonna let it go. It's useless...

Wow, thanks so much. I've been trying to figure this same issue out for days, and that was the problem. How on earth does popclip cause a problem like that in After Effects??
