Calculating Focal Length on Camcorder

Hie guys,

kindly assist me; 'am using a Sony HXR NX5E camcorder to shoot a music video that i want to use with Maya and Nuke but the tutorial 'am using requires me to know the focal length of the camera in order to use it in both software.

the problem is i don't know how to measure focal length and i don't seem to find any answers online so far.

i need to be able to calculate my focal length at any zoom level i maybe at any point in time during my live shoot.

your advice will be highly appreciated.

That's going to be tough.

Unless your camera has interchangeable lenses -- and I doubt that it does -- its lens will probably have a zoom ratio and a minimum and maximum focal length. You would then need to know how much you're zoomed in, and you could calculate the current lens focal length.

Your camera may have a menu setting that will display the amount of zoom. If it doesn't, you'd have to guess at it.
