There is a simple reason for your problem: you can't play anything in After Effects. It doesn't work as a video editing application works.

To get audio to play with the video, you have to do what's called a RAM Preview. It plays audio, and it will play the video as fast as it possibly can. Sometimes the video will play in real-time, and sometimes it won't. It depends on a lot of factors: frame rate, horizontal & vertical resolution, the comp window size (100%, 50%, 25%, etc.), the comp's visible resolution (Full, Half, Quarter, etc.).

There is a large section on previewing in AE's online help:
http://help.adobe.com/en_US/aftereffects/cs/using/WS3878526689cb91655866c11...

I personally never use the space bar or the play button when I preview.

It could be the kind of video footage you're using. Some cameras embed the audio in the video: they don't have a separate audio track, which AE needs.

To get the audio, you would need to convert the video. I suggest a Quicktime movie in the PNG codec. Don't use after Effects to do it. If you don't have quicktime, use a lossless AVI.
