Problem with avchd files and lots of affects
on Oct 4, 2011 at 12:24:04 pm

i am using adobe after effects cs5 but putting all the avchd files with all these affects makes it very slow and i have pretty good computer like 16GB ram and i am thinking to convert mts video first and then edit that so what is a good convert and a good format to convert without losing quality

thanks

yep, avchd can consume a bit of power to decode.

quicktime lossless animation and photo-jpeg decode pretty quickly and can maintain quality. apple's prores or avid's dnxhd wouldn't be to bad either.

adobe's media encoder should do it, but you could use ae too.

IF you want to use AE, justs import the AVCHD file, drag it over the "new composition" icon at the bottom of the project window. This makes a project with the exact size, frame rate, and duration of your footage.

Then render that new composition, and choose Lossless as the output module (be sure to include audio if you have any), or choose any other codec -- the ones Kevin suggested would work fine. When maintaining 100% image fidelity isn't necessary, I'll often use Photo-Jpeg and set the quality to 98% -- this is almost (almost!) lossless, and saves a bunch of space on the hard drives.

Yes. You want to pre-render everything, without making any adjustments.

For my projects I have an ASSETS folder where I put all source files. In that folder, I will call one folder "ORIGINAL_FOOTAGE" and a second one "TRANSCODE_FOOTAGE" which has all the pre-renders. Usually I save an AE project in the ORIGINAL_FOOTAGE folder, which was used exclusively for pre-rendering all the footage (if I used AE for that process, at any rate. I tend to use AME or Compressor, but AE works as well).

Then I open a new AE project and drag in all the TRANSCODE_FOOTAGE items (which I just rendered) and I'm on my way!
