I am a broadcast journalism student who is now enrolled in an After Effects class at my university. I was just wondering what types of things in After Effects would benefit me to know in my field of work. What kinds kinds of graphics and techniques would be beneficial to learn to as an aspiring television reporter?

well, all the basic stuff (if i get you right).
- Keyframes
- Import/Export
- Maybe "Adobe Dynamic Link" (depens on...but good to know)
- Masks
- Alpha-Channel (What, When, how?)
- Blend Modes

I think this is the Basic stuff you´l need to get some results for Television.

I edited news and currently work with a former reporter(asked her too) and if reporting is what you are planning on doing, really I can't imagine you needing any AE skills.

That being said, it never hurts to know how things work and I think what would be most important would be to understand formats and such so that if you do deliver something to a graphics guy or editor you are giving him the proper files at the right sizes and not causing him or her to do more work than neccessary.

Good luck on your future endevours.
