Is there a way, after making a selection in AE to make it into an alpha channel without having to render the footage out first?

When using Keylight, is there a way to save the screen matte as a separate item so that it can be used elsewhere for other purposes?

If you render Alpha Channel Only, you'll end up with a B&W piece of footage, where 100% black is totally transparent, 100% white is totally opaque, and anything in between is varying degrees of opacity. You can then use it as a luma matte in other applications.

And, to answer your first question, yeah. Just precomp it and use it as a track matte.
